Gwen desperately needed to unwind after a hard tennis practice. Normally she loved the adrenalin rush she received from volleying the ball back and forth across the net, zinging the ball just out of reach of her opponent. That afternoon, she spent more time dodging insults and supposedly stray balls than a good workout with her racket.

She needed to go for a run to clear her head and recharge. Hitting the trail through the woods and along the lake had been a daily ritual for years and she sorely missing it the last few weeks. Dumping her backpack and tennis bag on the coffee table, she threw on a pair of shorts and a tank top and laced up her sneakers.

Grabbing her earbuds and tucking her phone into a slim carrier band around her waist, she was ready to go. A little Maroon 5 and Matchbox Twenty would get her in the groove. She liked to listen to it loud so that it tuned out the rest of the world.

Already feeling better, she locked up her apartment and started off down the sidewalk. Before long she was on her favorite trail leading to a scenic overlook at the lake and close to the spot where Drew first kissed her after so many years.

Gwen was going to get Drew to run with her in the mornings again. It was always their thing and it needed to be again.

A presence at her side caused her to miss a step and stumble, but a hand grabbed her arm to keep her from falling. Gwen’s breath caught as she focused on the man at her side.

Dressed in tight biker shorts with looser ones over them, a tight black T-shirt and black sneakers, Dominic looked like he jogged every day. His muscles were clearly defined and chiseled. For an older gentleman, he was ripped.

Gwen stumbled backwards away from him, her eyes wide with fear.

He put his hands out, palms toward her. “Easy. You’re going to trip and fall.”

Gwen frowned at him, not understanding what he was trying say.

Dominic pointed to his ear.

It took Gwen a second to realize it. She always forgot that her earbuds blocked out everything but her music. Pulling the buds free, she faced Dominic. "What are you doing here?"

His expression clearly indicated that he thought that was a stupid question. He glanced down at his attire and then back at her. “Do you really need an answer to that question?”

Gwen folded her arms across her chest. “Yeah. I do. Why are you jogging on my trail at the same time I’m jogging here?”

Dominic considered her for a while. “You wouldn’t believe me if I told you.”

Gwen squinted at him. “Try me.”

He smiled and if he hadn’t been a bad guy, Gwen would have thought his smile was dazzling. “Are you going to keep an open mind or are you going to continue to go with misconceptions and propaganda?”

“Misconceptions and propaganda? That’s what you’re going with?” Gwen shoved her earbuds in her pocket.
